Volunteering at Solano County Parks

Volunteers are welcome at our parks to serve as camp hosts, interpretive docents and to help with trail repairs and planting on occasional work days.

Camp Hosts serve at our two campgrounds at Lake Solano County Park (near Winters) and Sandy Beach County Park (Rio Vista).  Volunteer Docents lead guided tours and nature walks, help with exhibits and special park improvement projects, and receive training as interpreters at Lake Solano County Park, the Lake Solano Nature Center, and Lynch Canyon Open Space Park.  County Park Rangers also gather Park Volunteers for one-day park improvement projects, native plant restoration work and to clean up our park shorelines during the Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day in September each year.

Who Do I Contact?  Upcoming volunteer workdays are shown on the County Events Calendar.  To volunteer at Lake Solano Park, call (530) 795-2990.  To volunteer at Lynch Canyon Open Space Park, contact the Volunteer/Outreach Coordinator at (707) 432-0150, extension 200 or volunteer@solanolandtrust.org.  To volunteer at Sandy Beach Park, call (707) 374-2097.  For Coastal Cleanup Day sign-ups and event details, click here .

Volunteer Training

Training is periodically offered for volunteer docents who will lead tours and classes at Lake Solano Park and Lynch Canyon. Training includes information on local wildlife, plants, water resources, and local pioneer and Native American history, as well as safety and emergency procedures on the trail.  New docents can also tag along with more experienced volunteers to learn how to lead hikes.  The Volunteer/Outreach Coordinator will also work with docents to develop volunteer opportunities that meet all interests and skills. Docent training typically occurs in the spring.

Volunteer Work Parties

Volunteer work parties help us to enhance, protect and improve the parks through maintenance and restoration projects.  Projects include planting native plants, upkeep and building of the trails, and enhancement of streamside vegetation to improve the site for wildlife and park visitors. Bring work gloves and be prepared to get dirty.

Check the County Parks Events Calendar to find out about upcoming work parties, or contact the Volunteer/Outreach Coordinator to schedule a team project for your group on a date convenient for you, at (707) 432-0150, extension 200 or volunteer@solanolandtrust.org.
