What Is It?
This is a judicial process that declares that a person is "mentally incompetent" and names another person as conservator of the person, of the estate, or both. The conservator is then granted, through Court order, specific powers and authorities over the disabled individual, such as handling all financial affairs, entering into contracts, deciding where a person will live, and arranging for medical care.

"Mentally incompetent" means that the individual is unable to provide for his/her food, clothing and shelter due to his/her physical or mental condition.

There are several types of conservatorship in California.
  • LPS (Lanterman-Petris-Short)Conservatorship
  • Probate Conservatorship
  • Limited Conservatorship
