Household Hazardous Waste

What is Hazardous Waste?
Hazardous wastes are corrosive, toxic, reactive, or flammable materials which can be found in our homes and businesses. These materials can be harmful to people, wildlife, and the environment. These wastes must be taken to special facilities for disposal; it is illegal to put this type of waste in the trash, pour it down the storm drains or sewers, or dump it on the ground.
What are some Examples?
Examples of hazardous waste include: latex and oil-based paints, poisons, solvents, garden chemicals, cleansers, oven cleaners, household and automotive batteries, automotive fluids, contaminated oil, full aerosol cans, and pool chemicals.
How Can I Get Rid of This Stuff?
There are several programs for disposing of and recycling hazardous wastes in Solano County:

  • Household Hazardous Waste Facilities accept batteries, oil, latex, and oil-based paints, antifreeze, automotive fluids, pesticides, cleaners, poisons, solvents, and chemicals. No charge to residents.
  • BOPA accept only car Batteries, used Oil and Filters, Latex Paint, and Antifreeze (some accept household batteries). No charge to residents.
  • Small Quantity Generator facilities accept only hazardous waste from qualified businesses. A fee is charged for disposal.

None of these programs accept radioactive waste, medical or infectious waste, explosives, or PCB's. If you have any of this material, see For More Information. Empty aerosol cans should be recycled or placed in the trash; partially full or full aerosol cans must be taken to a HHW program. Call ahead for compressed gas cylinders.

How Can I Avoid It?
Avoid buying these materials by using less toxic cleaners and natural pest control techniques whenever possible. Only buy what you need. If you have materials left over (such as paint), give it to a neighbor, friend, or relative who will.
Safely Storing and Transporting Your Materials to a Waste Collection Site:
Store materials upright in their original labeled containers in a cool dry place (not your car). Do not mix different wastes together. Make sure all containers are sealed; if any are leaking, put them inside another container such as a box or plastic bag.
